charlie crist no. 14

After an extended sabbatical, the latest letter to Governor Crist (to be sent tomorrow):

07.05.2008

Dear Governor Crist,

Recently, while traveling eastbound on Interstate I-4 (towards Orlando), I noticed that there was a small campaign of highway patrol officers who were pulling speeders over. Luckily, I was operating my vehicle at the predetermined speed set by traffic engineers (65 MPH) and was spared a citation. Seeing so many of my fellow drivers prompted me to research traffic citation statistics within Hillsborough County. The D.M.V. states that in 2006: 70,945 drivers were pulled over for driving at a speed over the posted limit. With police pulling in these kinds of big numbers, I think we’re missing out on a real opportunity here.
You may be already aware, Governor Crist that the Presidential Fitness Challenge has been modified for the average adult citizen. Florida is in need of a real PR boost, and what better way to do it than actively engaging a largely sedentary populous through rigorous daily fitness doled out by local law enforcement?
As a new state sponsored measure to encourage physical fitness, I propose that the average citizen be given a choice when they are pulled over for traffic infractions – “pay the fine, or give me fifty pushups right this second!” Highway patrolman can now assume the role of over-eager P.E. coach as they count (aloud) each of the speeder’s beneficial pushups, sit-ups, squat thrusts, or lunges (to be performed on a state sponsored mat provided by the law enforcement agency). A sliding scale would determine the type and amount of exercise based on the transgression. I believe that roadside fitness would be most beneficial to our elderly drivers who make up the largest growing demographic in the country (85 and up). The benefit of daily exercise is incontestable, and would be sure to rebuild muscle mass and tighten sagging triceps.
If there is any question as to starting such a program or if you need a recommendation on the kinds of exercises to be implemented in the program, please do not hesitate to ask about the program. Thank you, Governor Crist.

Sincerely,

Michael Reynolds

P.S.

Congratulations on your engagement.
