I was talking with Wendy today about E.J. Bellocq...
He's one of my favorite underappreciated photographers...He was an unspectacular commercial photographer who took pretty spectacular portraits (both formal and informal) of prostitutes of the Storyville District in New Orleans. The photographs were uncovered by Lee Friedlander in a junk shop many years later... A lot of the faces are scratched out (possibly by Bellocq's brother, who was a Jesuit priest). check out www.fraenkelgallery.com for more of his work.

hi mike.
thanks for the post. I was looking for exactly that photo for quiet a while now. I like his work very much...apart from his abilities maybe also because there are so many questions about him and his work.
so thanks, take care.
